Permeable driveways and planning
Since 2008 you have needed planning permission to lay more than five square metres of impermeable surface in a front garden unless the water is directed to a permeable area within your own boundary. In practice this means most new front driveways in Poole and Bournemouth are built either permeable, or with drainage into a soakaway or border.
We build them that way as standard. It is the right answer for the property as well as the paperwork – surface water with nowhere to go finds the house.

How much does a new driveway cost in Poole?
For a typical two-car driveway of around 40 square metres, block paving generally comes in between £4,500 and £8,000 fully excavated and installed, natural stone or porcelain higher again, and resin bound broadly similar to block paving where it can be laid over a sound existing base. Ground conditions, drainage and whether a dropped kerb is needed are the main variables.
Do I need planning permission for a driveway?
You do not need permission if the surface is permeable, or if surface water is directed to a lawn or border within your own property. You do need it if you lay more than five square metres of impermeable surface that drains to the road. A dropped kerb across the pavement always needs approval from the highway authority.
How long does a driveway take?
A typical domestic driveway is four to seven working days on site – roughly two for excavation and sub-base, then laying, cutting, edging and jointing. Resin bound needs a dry spell, so we schedule it around the weather rather than promising a date and rushing it.
